McDonald's now does coffee

Song Yingwen
THEY'RE not just for burgers anymore.
On Saturday, exactly 10 years after McDonald's opened its first restaurant in China, Shenzhen saw the grand opening of McCafe, a new incarnation of the global burger empire.
The new coffee shop is located inside the Guanghua McDonald's on Jiefang Road, in Luohu District, which was the city's first McDonald's. The cafe offers a wide selection of coffee, snacks and cakes. The atmosphere of the McCafe bears little resemblance to a fast-food joint. With its glass coffee tables, rattan armchairs, rows of French windows, and tasteful decor, McCafe is obviously reaching for a more mature audience.
“Actually I like it better for its brightness and pleasant atmosphere," Miss Zhuang, a young lady who was itching to find out what this new member of the McDonald's family is all about, told Shenzhen Daily.
Coffee lovers will perhaps care more about the prices, which are surprisingly low. The price for a cup of coffee at McCafe ranges from 15 to 25 yuan (US$1.8-3), which is almost 50 per cent cheaper than in other coffee shops in town.
“McCafe was created to cater to the different tastes of our customers. With a coffee culture taking root in recent years, we see great market potential in China. Our principle is to make sure our customers can enjoy high quality coffee at a reasonable price," Eric Foo, the regional manager of South China, explained.
The first McCafe opened in Australia in 1993. Shenzhen is the third city in China to host a McCafe, following Hong Kong and Beijing. But Foo says the Shenzhen McCafe is the best in China because “we are making continuous improvements in every respect."
