Policemen awarded by UN
|
TWO local policemen have returned home from East Timor, where they served as UN peacekeepers, bearing medals bestowed by the United Nations.
Wang Weidong, 32, has served with distinction with the SZ Public Security Bureau's Nanshan branch since 1991 after graduation from college.
The other award winner is Jin Zhaoyang with the Public Security Bureau's Luohu branch. The same age as Wang, he joined the branch in 1991 after graduating from Hangzhou Institute of Electronic Engineering.
They were included in a 15-strong peacekeeping unit whose members were carefully selected from Beijing and the southeastern coastal areas of the country by the Ministry of Public Security in April 1999. The team headed for the war-worn country on January 25, 2000.
Wang took various posts including one at a lockup during his one-year tour, while Jin acted for most of his stay as a personnel official at the Police Bureau in Dili, the capital of East Timor.
They overcame many hardships, particularly language barriers and heavy psychological pressure from possible attacks which may claim their lives at any time. Though six peacekeepers were killed on duty in Timor, the Chinese peacekeepers never hesitated to carry out their duty, which, they proudly said, was to keep the peace in a war-weary land. (SD News)
