IN a rare move for a local theme park, Shenzhen Safari Park has invited an engineering expert to act as its senior technology consultant.
Ma Jianzhang, who accepted the invitation earlier this week, is the only academician in the country engaged in wildlife conservation and research. He now is the honorary president, professor and tutor of doctorate candidates at the Northeast Forestry University.
With a dozen national awards in wildlife study, Ma was honoured as a member of Chinese Academy of Engineering in 1995. He has devoted most of his life to the cause of wildlife protection. The academician said he is overjoyed to provide advice to the park.
The park, which has already achieved many firsts in the nation, including the first breeding of an Amur tiger, black swan and golden monkey. It is one of the most popular safari parks in the country, but it still faces fierce competition as more safari parks open. General Manager Song Qiang acknowledges this, and says she believes the only way to maintain the park's position is to continue introducing new breeds and upgrading technology.
Ma has already thrown himself into his work. He pointed out many existing shortcomings in the park and offered practical ideas for the second construction phase, which will soon begin construction.
Ma said he will spare no effort to help the park growing and becoming the nation's, even the world's, top safari park. (You Chunhui)
