New headmasters chosen
|
THREE new primary school headmasters took up their jobs on Monday in Luohu District. The three had been hired following an unusual public competition for the positions, in which 18 qualified applicants vied to fill three posts left vacant by retiring principals.
All the candidates had degrees above the junior college level, over nine years of teaching experience and over three years in the position of assistant headmaster. They were also required to possess a senior teacher's title and must not exceed 45 years of age.
A judging committee of 11 local education officials and experts tested the candidates, who were also evaluated by 30 representative teachers and public servants within the district. All the candidates accepted the result willingly, calling it "fair play".
Yang Huanliang, youngest of the three who were hired, is only 33. Another is 35 and the third is a woman headmaster presently pursuing her master's degree.
Leaving home at 6.50am, Yang arrived early on the first day in his new post. Then, under the curious yet friendly gaze of over 1,000 teachers and students, he gave a speech before the flag-raising ceremony 7.45am. As the clock struck 8, the new headmaster took a tour of the school and its classes, and later in the day, he hurried to a seminar dealing with curriculum reform.
