Foreigners give blood
|

AFTER donating 400cc each of their precious blood at the Shenzhen Blood Centre, Terry Wing and Chris Legus, two foreign teachers from Delta Business Institute, can now receive free blood transfusion in future if required, a small repayment for their own voluntary donations yesterday morning.
They never intended, they say, to gain from their act. “It is always a good thing to help people, no matter which country you are in. The first time I saw the sign ‘give blood, help people' outside the Shenzhen Blood Centre months ago, I had the idea of donating blood," said Chris, the American who suggested the donation.
But it was not until he met his student Shao Chaopeng, a staffer with the centre, did he know how to act on his wish.
Chris did not come alone. He brought with him his two colleagues, Terry Wing and Phil Knight from New Zealand. But Phil was not as lucky as his friends: he was turned away by the doctors because he was suffering from a cold. “I will try again later," Phil said.
According to the centre, Chris and Terry are the 62nd and 63rd foreign donors in the city since the blood bank opened in May 1993. “Every volunteer is welcome, whether they are foreigners or locals," Dr Yang, head of the centre, said.
