BEIJING: More than 4.97 million Chinese went abroad in 2000, a 15.7 per cent increase over the previous year, the China Youth Daily reported yesterday, quoting the country's Exit and Entry Administration.
Consumers' rights
BEIJING: The China Consumers Association on Monday made several suggestions in response to safety concerns raised about vehicles manufactured by the Mitsubishi corporation.
Japanese Mitsubishi should make a public apology, the association says, and replace the products in question. It should also pay compensation for deaths caused by the hidden problems according to relevant laws, an official with the association said.
Fee charge
BEIJING: The Ministry of Information (MII) on Monday denied the rumour that current charges for mobile phone fees would be changed in the next two years, yesterday's China Daily reported. “Any adjustment to the telecommunications charges concerns the interest of general public and charges can't be adjusted without public hearings," said MII spokesman.
Fires kill 3,021
BEIJING: A total of 188,600 fires occurred in China last year, killing 3,021 people, injuring 4,404 and causing 1.52 billion yuan (US$184 million) of direct economic loss, according to figures released by China's fire control authority under the Ministry of Public Security on Monday.
