High-end Internet equipment eyed
|
Liu Fuzhong
LOCAL technology firm Mediaworld Inc teamed up with leading US chip designer Broadcom Corporation on Wednesday to develop super-fast broadband-enabling chips for high-end switches and other Internet products.
The first local chips from the collaboration will come out in April, signaling that local system-on-chip solutions will for the first time compete with foreign products in the local as well as international markets.
According to Cai Jun, vice-president of Mediaworld Inc, this is a new area of development for the company, which specializes in system integration. Cai believes that Internet equipment, a market dominated by foreign suppliers, will give the company a new boost in the coming years.
According to James Mannos, director of engineering of Broadcom, this is the second project outside the United States for Broadcom Corporation. Mannos said the company chose Shenzhen as its second overseas location because of its well-established technology infrastructure. The company's first overseas establishment was in Bangalore, India.
Vice-Mayor Guo Rongju met with Mannos on Wednesday.
