Poetry, music mark Valentine's Day

OVER 200 local English fans, many of them couples, were entertained with poetry and music at Shenzhen Daily's English Salon on Wednesday, Valentine's Day.
Professor Nigel Reeves, vice-president of Aston University in Birmingham, Britain, read love poems and introduced the audience to some English translations of Chinese poems.
Professor Reeves gave rhythmic recitations of romantic poems, adding special flavour to the special occasion.
He said Chinese poems are very well liked in Britain because of their expression of feelings.
Later, the musical part of the salon brought the audience to an exciting climax. Bob Bellows from the United States, an internationally established pianist, vocal artist and showman, sang familiar English love songs. His mellow and sonorous voice won over the whole audience. They listened, laughed, sang and shared their happiness with their beloved partners.
When he finished his last song, fans immediately surrounded him. He said "Happy Valentine's Day" to everybody as he signed autographs.
Bellows, already in his 70s, has performed on many important occasions. Yet he said he felt most happy singing for his audience in Shenzhen.
"They understand music. And they understand English. When I sang, I felt like I was communicating with old friends," he said.
