Fare hikes questioned
|
THE yearly Spring Festival hike in railway ticket prices was put under public scrutiny when the China Consumers Association disclosed yesterday that it had asked the Ministry of Railway to reply to a query on the legitimacy of the practice.
Wang Qianhu, of the association, told the Jiancha Daily that they sent to the ministry on February 12 a list of questions focusing on the legal basis of the fare hike and asked for a reply before February 25.
Wang said: “The rise in ticket price has violated the right of consumers to know facts, make choices and expect fair dealing." He said the ministry has failed to abide by a law which requires a hearing be held for train ticket increases.
On February 1, Qiao Zhanxiang, a lawyer in Hebei Province, received a notice from the ministry accepting his petition for an administrative review of the hike. He attacked the ministry by saying it reaped immoral windfalls from tens of millions of passengers across the country by imposing a price hike of up to 30 per cent during the festival.
Li Jingsong, a resident in Foshan City, Guangdong Province, earlier filed a lawsuit against a bus company for raising the fare from 85 yuan to 239 yuan for a trip from Foshan to Chaozhou during the festival.(SD News)
