Chinese dancers in car crash
|
THREE vans carrying members of a Chinese dance troupe crashed on an icy highway in Washington state last Friday, killing at least two people and injuring 21.
Three people were listed in serious condition last Friday night, hospital officials said. None of the injuries were life-threatening, they said. Most of the victims, ranging in age from 16 to 20, were treated and released.
The dead were identified as Shuli Jia, 17, and Xiang Gong, 16, the State Patrol said.
The 36 members of the Beijing Academy of Dance were on a three-week tour that opened in Seattle the week before last and was to include performances in Oregon and California. The group performed in Spokane last Thursday night.
The accident occurred on a rural highway running through a wheatfield near the small town of Ritzville, which is about 320 kilometers east of Seattle.
The troupe had been travelling with 200 costumes and eight backdrops.
"We're sending officials from our consulate to handle this sad accident," said Lei Hong, a spokesman with the Chinese consulate in San Francisco.(SD-Agencies)
