Youngsters vie for fame

IN a dazzling rush of excitement, the 20 finalists in the TV Image Contest, having survived elimination from among 15,000 entries, took to the stage at SZ Stadium on Saturday.
First the young stars, half male and half female, introduced themselves to the audience. The introductions, though short, affected their scores, as slight accents or stumbles could cost them points.
Then they acted out a series of short historical dramas to showcase their artistic skills, be they singing, dancing, painting or performing music.
Next came a grueling quiz. The contestants had to answer a question without being able to prepare for it. Experienced TV host Dai Jun, who emceed the ceremony, probed the youngsters for imagination and wit, while at the same time entertaining the audience.
Then there came the main event: a beauty contest. All the female contestants had to be slim, with height ranging from 167cm to 172cm. The male competitors, meanwhile, seemed to disappoint the audience, who had apparently expected gallant displays of youthful energy.
The contest was well-attended, a sizable part of the audience being youngsters with their own dreams of fame.
"I'm sorry to say I was edged out in the semi-finals," said Jane Yang, who sat quite close to the stage. "I still remember when the result was announced that day, the stage was covered with the tears of winners and losers. We all worked hard to compete."
The event, which kicked off last October, is meant to find someone whose image symbolizes today's youth. First prize, by the way, went to a girl named Wang Yi, 26, from Sichuan Province, while the winner of the male group was college student Li Weiqi from Liaoning Province. The second price winners were Bai Xue and Duan Ran, both middle school students.
