Tuvalu(图瓦卢)
|
TUVALU comprises nine islands in the west-central Pacific, 4,000 km northeast of Australia. Fongafale on Funafuti Atoll (富纳富提岛) is the capital. The area is about 23.96 square km and population (1993 estimate) is about 10,000.
The climate is warm throughout the year with relatively high humidity; daytime temperatures range from 27C to 29C, but the islands are cooled by prevalent southeast trade wind.
Tuvaluans(图卢瓦人)are more than 90 per cent Polynesian (波利尼西亚人). There are very few Europeans or other foreigners. English, the official language, is widely used throughout the islands. Population density is extremely high, and about one-third of the population is urban, mostly concentrated on Funafuti Atoll, the centre of government and commerce.
Tuvalu's developing economy is based mainly on subsistence agriculture, fishing, and limited cash-crop (为谋现金而种植的商品植物) production. Its gross national product per capita is relatively low in comparison with other countries of Oceania.
Tuvalu became independent on October 1, 1978.(SD-Agencies)
