THE recording industry's most prestigious award in America, the Grammy is presented annually by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences of America to honor excellence in the recording arts and sciences. It is truly a peer honor to artists and technical professionals for artistic or technical achievement, not sales or chart positions. The annual Grammy Awards presentation brings together thousands of creative and technical professionals in the recording industry from all over the world.The Grammy Awards are telecast annually to an international audience of over 1.5 billion in 170 countries.
美国唱片业的最高奖项--格莱美奖每年由美国录音艺术与科学学会（以下简称录音学会）颁发，用以奖励唱片艺术及技术方面的杰出成就。对于在艺术及技术发展取得成就的艺术家及技术专家们来说，它是一种纯粹的荣誉，而非销售唱片或颁发排行榜的行为。一年一度的格莱美颁奖典礼将世界各地在唱片业中数以千记的创作人员及技术人员聚到一起。每年格莱美颁奖典礼都会向世界170多个国家的15亿观众进行电视直播。
The awards first came into being in the latter half of the 1950's--a period when America was having to face the fact that their clean- cut youth were getting turned on by this crazy new "rock and roll" music.In 1957, a visionary group of music professionals and label executives in Los Angeles recognized the need to create an organization that would represent the creative people in the recording arts and sciences.
格莱美奖最初设立于20世纪50年代后期，那时美国不得不面对这样的事实：那些本来干净清秀的年轻人受到疯狂的新兴摇滚乐的影响后变得越来越不安分。1957年，洛杉矶的一群有远见的音乐行家及唱片公司的决策人意识到有必要设立一个组织，以此来代表唱片艺术及技术领域中有才华的人。
The founding members of the Recording Academy wanted to recognize and celebrate the artistic achievement of not only talented musicians and singers but also important, behind-the-scenes contributors such as producers and engineers. Conceived as a way to create a real recording industry community, the Recording Academy was born and the Grammy Awards process began.

The Grammy Awards process begins with members and record companies submitting entries, which are then screened for eligibility and category placement. The Academy's voting members, all involved in the creative and technical processes of recording, then participate in the nominating process that determines the five finalists in each category; and the final voting process which determines the Grammy winners.
格莱美奖的评奖过程由录音学会会员及唱片公司提交入围作品开始，此后对这些作品进行资格评选及分类。学会中的投票人员都从事过唱片的创作及技术制作，他们将参加提名，决定每个类别中的最后五个参选作品，并最后投票选出格莱美奖获得者。
Reviewing sessions by more than 150 experts in various fields are held to ensure that entered recordings meet specific qualifications and have been placed in appropriate fields such as rock, R&B, jazz, country, gospel, classical & Latin, and others.
复选过程由150多个不同音乐领域的专家参加，以保证入围唱片符合特殊的要求，并已归入恰当类别，如摇滚乐、节奏勃鲁斯乐，爵士乐，乡村音乐，福音音乐、古典及拉丁乐，及其它。
Results of members' voting are not known until the Grammy
Awards presentation ceremony when names of the winners are sealed envelopes. Grammy Award winners are revealed during the Grammy Awards telecast.
会员们投票的结果直到格莱美颁奖典礼时才知道，那时获奖者的名字都在密封的信封里。而获奖者们只有在格莱美奖电视节目中才公布。
The Grammy Awards themselves have grown right along with the organization that presents them. They are now a state-of-the-art live extravaganza and the premier music awards show on television. Nearly every major recording artist has made an appearance on the telecast.

In addition to the Grammy Award, the Recording Academy presents several other awards to honor important music and music professionals. The Lifetime Achievement Award, established in 1965, celebrates performers and others music professionals who have made outstanding contributions to recording in their lifetimes. The Trustees Award followed in 1967, recognizing primarily non-performing contributions whose scope did not fall within the Grammy Awards categories. And the Recording Academy's Hall of Fame was established in 1973 to commemorate recordings of lasting qualitative or historical significance.
除了格莱美奖，录音学会还颁发其它几项奖励重要音乐作品及杰出音乐人的奖项。1965年设立的终身成就奖是为了颂扬一生为唱片业作出杰出贡献的表演者及其他音乐人士。在此这后的1967年设立的受托奖则是为了表彰格莱美奖项范围之外的非表演性质的重大贡献。1973年设立的名人录奖是为了纪念唱片业的持续稳定的质量或历史意义。
