Cucumber 黄瓜
|
The cucumber is a long, thin, round vegetable. Its skin is tough and dark green; its flesh (肉) is watery and light green (浅绿).
Cucumbers can be eaten raw (1) or cooked. Westerners like to eat them raw in salads or sandwiches. Small cucumbers are often used for pickling (腌制). In Chinese restaurants small pieces of pickled cucumber are often served as an appetizer (开胃小吃) before the dinner.
In the face of danger some people are frightened out of their wits(2). In contrast, in the same situation some other people remain as cool as a cucumber(3). These people can think calmly and clearly and soon find a way out of difficulty.
Notes:
1. be eaten raw: 生吃。
2. be frightened out of their wits: 惊惶失措。
3. remain as cool as a cucumber: 泰然自若。
