GD to cut telecom charges
|
SOUTH China's Guangdong Province is set to sharply cut its telecom charges from today, according to the provincial Telecom Administration Bureau on Monday.
The reduced charges will be for international calls, national long-distance calls, calls among rural areas and between rural and urban areas, and logging online. Only calls within major cities will see a small rise.
According to the announcement, some of the charges will be opened to and adjusted by the market. An official with the provincial Telecom Administration Bureau said that the cut is the biggest change in Guangdong since China's opening-up policy started over 20 years ago.
Although Guangdong Telecom will see a sharp decrease in yearly income of 5.59 billion yuan (US$673 million), the official said that the adjustment will enhance communications between rural and urban areas. It will also help accelerate the application of informatization and spur healthy competition in the sector, he added.(Xinhua)
