Consulate offers library

AS growing numbers of Chinese students vie to study in American universities, many are finding themselves held back by difficulties in finding information about US universities.
A little-known resource exists, however, in the Information Service (USSI) of the US Consulate General in Guangzhou, located in that city's Garden Hotel, which according to its director Mark Canning is a good place to get such information.
The Information Service's library offers immigration and university information and is open to everybody for free, Canning said.
“All one needs to do is to present his or her identification card," he said.
One can also browse the Internet to log on to the university or programme he or she has located in the library.
US Information Service in Guangzhou also runs an English Corner, which is held every Thursday afternoon. Every week a native English speaker gives a presentation.
Canning believes that the English Corner can help Chinese students get more information about the US and also provides an opportunity for native speakers of English to interact with local people.
Canning says the US Information Service offers information far beyond education and immigration. It serves governmental offices, businesses and individuals who are interested in co-operation between the United States and China.
According to Canning, he and his colleagues are now working closely with the China Development Institute in Shenzhen to assist in policy-making research in China.
“The United States has accumulated much experience in fighting corruption, controlling pollution and other policy areas. There are also research institutes and scholars specializing in areas our Chinese counterparts are working on. The US Information Service can always bridge the communication gap between China and the United States," he said.
