£2.8m book deal
|
ONE of the biggest sums paid for a work of fiction has gone to a first-time novelist, Stephen Carter.
An intense bidding contest among New York's publishing houses ended when Knopf agreed to pay US$4 million (£2.8 million) for The Emperor of Ocean Park, the first novel by the black American law professor, and a still unwritten second work.
Hollywood is now beating a path to Mr Carter's digs at Yale University, Connecticut, offering him millions more for the film rights to his 900-page book. Up to now, Mr Carter has been known only for his legal work and a cluster of academic books.
His first novel is a sprawling family saga revolving around an investigation by a black law-school professor of the murder of his father, a conservative federal judge. Knopf says the book is a page-turner which is likely to become a huge bestseller. (SD-Agencies)
