SZ's best head for Guizhou

Han Ximin
DENG XIUHUA, a teacher at Nantou Middle School, is going to leave her family, but it's an act of generosity. For on Sunday, with 25 other volunteer teachers, she is heading for two areas called Qiannan and Zhijin, some of the most poverty-stricken spots in Guizhou Province, to spend a year as a volunteer teacher.
She will bring nearly 4,000 books, a mountain of equipment, money and clothes collected from teachers and students to the No 3 Middle School in Weining County.
In addition to teaching the Chinese language at the school, Deng, who has been a teacher for 16 years, will also be responsible for instructing the other teachers on the use of computers.
She is one of the three master degree holders among the volunteers.
"I am very lucky to have been chosen to teach in Guizhou. I think I was picked because of my teaching experience, education background and computer skills," said Deng on Wednesday.
The "Voluntary Teaching in Guizhou Programme", initiated by the Ministry of Education among eastern coastal cities including Qingdao, Dalian and Ningbo, has been a smash hit in Shenzhen. Many schools are now collecting donations including money, clothes and stationery, to send to Guizhou.
In Shenzhen Shiling Primary School, six teachers applied for the sole opening. Liu Zhaohui won out for his versatility. He is a fine art teacher, and is also very experienced in Chinese, English and Maths teaching.
It was said that most of the final candidates are degree holders with advanced and medium-level professional titles. Their average age is around 36.
Director-General Yang Baisheng of the Shenzhen Municipal Education Bureau said the programme reflects the wider move to support the develop-the-west strategy.
