Schools make a promise

SHENZHEN is making a promise to parents and children: the city will guarantee the best possible education system, beginning this March.
At a press conference yesterday, headmasters of Lianhua Middle School and Longcheng Primary School signed agreements with representatives of students, parents and communities.
Zeng Guifen with Shenzhen Municipal Education Supervision Office said the guaranteeing system was designed to improve teaching quality and spur greater social participation in school administration.
In mapping out an open and socialized supervision mechanism, the three-year-term warrant takes into consideration different aspects of teaching and school management. Schools are required to set operational and teaching goals for themselves with reference to advice from parents, students and communities.
Every term, schools are required to send a self-evaluation report to parents, while the parents themselves will be asked to rate the performance of their children's school.
A final evaluation result will be given at the end of three years by the education supervision office as a criterion for awards to schools, or punishment if warranted.
