Dong Xiaoming's lotus paintings
|
AN EXHIBITION of Dong Xiaoming's lotus paintings opens at the Guan Shanyue Art Museum today, and will run for six days. This is a preview of an exhibition of the painter's works which will be held in the headquarters of the United Nations in New York this March.
In the eyes of most Chinese men of letters, the lotus is not an ordinary water plant. Its ability to emerge unstained from the muck has inspired generations of Chinese poets and painters, but the huge number of previous works on the subject makes it difficult for modern painters to find a new way to express the spiritual connotations of the flower.
Dong, however, has developed a style of his own, managing to convey old themes more naturally with innovative techniques. Featuring light ink and thin yet flexible structures, his paintings can bring viewers to a remote area, free and unstrained. Dong once said: "I am trying to articulate traditional cultural spirit with modern aesthetic concepts."
Dong sees the exhibition as a mission to bring Chinese to the world.
"I will be gratified if my works can win more understanding friends among different cultures and peoples," he said recently.(Windy Shao)
