SZ gets a new sister
|
SHENZHEN and Hsinchu City, on the island of Taiwan, will become sister cities soon, according to the SZ Municipal Taiwan Affairs Office on Friday.
The move, initiated by SZ, is expected to help attract more Taiwan investment to the city and boost exchanges between the two Chinese cities.
Taiwan tops the list of targets in SZ's plan to lure foreign investment this year, especially IT firms. SZ's Mayor Yu Youjun has said he hopes to visit Taiwan himself for the purpose.
As of December 2000, over 3,000 Taiwan-invested firms were operating in Shenzhen, with an actual investment of US$3.871 billion.
Hsinchu is one of Taiwan's high-tech centres, including the Hsinchu Science-based Industrial Park (HSIP) internationally recognized as Taiwan's "Silicon Island".
After 18 years of hard work, the HSIP has become a model of success for science parks. By the end of 1998, the HSIP had a total of 272 companies with a combined annual sales revenue of about US$13.7 billion.
