GAO LIQIANG, former deputy chief of staff of the Shenzhen Frontier Inspection Sub-bureau under the SZ Municipal Public Security Bureau, was sentenced to six years in prison for bribery on Friday by the SZ Intermediate People's Court.
Prosecutors used evidence and witnesses to convince the court that at the end of 1994, four cargo ships belonging to a company based in Jiangmen, a city in western Guangdong Province, were detained by the frontier inspection subbureau on suspicion of smuggling. Then someone talked to Gao on behalf of the smugglers to try to transfer the case to the Jiangmen Municipal Public Security Bureau. Gao complied, receiving 100,000 yuan (US$12,000) in return.
In October in 1995, a Guangzhou-based ship was detained in SZ for suspected smuggling. Once again, prosecutors say, payment of another 100,000 yuan resulted in Gao letting the ship go.
Gao was found guilty of accepting yet another bribe in May 1997, when a Hong Kong ship was found carrying illegal frozen food. Gao, as he did before, released the ship without bringing its owner to justice.
Gao did not deny the charges. In return for a full confession and the return of the bribes, he was given a light sentence.
