Power station nearly complete

THE new Ling'ao Nuclear Power Station will begin operation in July 2002, said a press conference on Friday.
Reporters attending a press conference hosted by the station were told that all the electricity generated by the station will be for the use of Guangdong Province, unlike the arrangement with the existing Daya Bay Nuclear Power Station east of Shenzhen, which only sends 30 per cent of its power to Guangdong, the rest going to Hong Kong.
It is hoped that the new plant will help alleviate the province's growing need for electricity.
Ling'ao is the second nuclear power plant to be built in the province, the first being the Daya Bay station.
Liu Jinhua, general manager of the Ling'ao Nuclear Power Station Co Ltd, told reporters that the company is trying to foster a culture themed on safety and quality, and that a trial operation was a success.
By the end of 2000, US$2.43 billion was spent on the project, around US$70 million less than the budgeted US$2.5 billion.
With Ling'ao is up and running, nuclear power will account for eight per cent of Guangdong's electricity supplies, double the current level.
Last year, the province purchased electricity from Hong Kong for a time due to a severe shortage of electricity supplies.
