Potatoes can be prepared (烧煮) in many ways. Some people like baked potatoes; some care for mashed potatoes (土豆泥); some prefer potato chips, or French fries (油炸薯条), as the Americans call them.
"The principal thought it a hot potato (棘手的问题) to move the school to a new site." Here "a hot potato" means a question that causes heated argument and is difficult to settle.
"They are big shots (大人物); we are small potatoes (无名小卒)." Here "small potatoes" means people of no importance. We can use the phrase in another sense. "The teacher thought little of the matter because he considered it a small potato."
