what and how
|
In the first group of sentences, the key words are nouns, we therefore stress them and drop our voice there to show their importance. In the second group of sentences, however, our stress falls on the verbs or adjectives or adverbs. We drop our voice there to show that they are the focus of information or interest. Let's mark out the falling tones in the sentences as follows. Practise until you can say them well.
I.
1. What a `day (Waht a good/terrible time we had)!
2. What nice/nasty `weather!
3. What a nice `girl/boy/man/lady!
4. What a beautiful `voice!
5. What a fast `runner!
II.
1. How we en`joyed oueselves (We had such a wonderful time)!
2. How `nice/nasty the weather is!
3. How `nice she/he is!
4. How we `love the famous singer!
5. How `fast he runs!
There are, of course, other ways to express strong emotions. Here are some possible ways:
1. We had such a wonderful time!
2. The weather is so nice!
3. He/She is very nice man/lady!
4. We admire her/him!
5. He runs like a deer!
6. The word gives me headache!
7. We have seen such great changes!
