Local students embrace IT

Li Dan
IN Shenzhen University, everybody knows this address: sunrise.szu.edu.cn. Since it went online last year, the website has drawn much attention on and off campus with a fresh style and closeness to students' life.
Logging onto this website, you can browse news on campus, download wallpaper and computer games, order songs to be played for your loved ones, and learn online. For formally registered users, still more services are offered, including video clips from the latest films.
The site, which won first place in the "Samsung Cup" website contest's SZ category and third place in the province, has grown out of the efforts of just a handful of students.
With a room and servers provided by the school library, hard discs and a new domain name, the founders of sunrise brought it to life by finding and creating the most interesting content they could.
There is, however, more to the story.
"Last year we saw the ruination of network myths," pondered Wen, leader of the group. "Life is hard for any website without a unique feature, excellent technological maintenance, co-operation or marketing." So the sunrise group decided to establish a specialized technological support provider.
After months of research and development, Wen led his group through a series of challenges that saw the birth of their own information collecting system, news publication system, online music ordering and voice chatting. Calling themselves sun chasers, the group has won contracts from several other websites including www.trainingsoft.com and www.e-event.com.
The intelligent guiding system used in the website of the Second China Hi-Tech Fair was the group's pride and joy, and their virtual community system has been a hit at last year's China (Shenzhen) International Housing and Archi-tech Trade Fair.
Chewing on instant noodles in their mini-workshop, the sun chasers share a common dream. "We hope we can continue to grow," Wen said. "It's lonely to wander by yourself on the Internet. Friends working together can make it more exciting, and especially when we work towards a common goal."
