Foreign investors speak

SHENZHEN Municipal Government's urgent demand for greater efficiency in the city administration is good news to investors, especially to foreign-funded firms.
Jae Il Kim, president of Shenzhen STS Microelectronics said in an interview yesterday that the government's effort to improve working efficiency and optimize its investment environment sets the city on the right course for its future development.
"It shows the government' s determination to compete on a global basis. Foreign investment companies in SZ should be grateful for this," said Kim.
As a giant semiconductor manufacturer to the world, the company said it has been working very well with related government departments since it started co-operation in 1997.
Kim said Shenzhen is still one of the best places for investment in China. The company spent US$77 million on expanding its operation last year.
Yet Kim said that the company has some problems with the Shenzhen Customs Office. The company has to import chemicals for production. The complicated customs declaration procedures last year almost held up production. He hopes the promise made by the SZ Customs House to simplify procedures will bring more tangible benefits to enterprises.
Yasunori Ueda, general manager of Xerox High-technology (Shenzhen) Co Ltd, said he was really inspired by the city's pioneering spirit and farsightedness in its decision to improve government efficiency.
"Our company has been operating well in Shenzhen since we first came here in June 1995. It has now turned out to be the largest production centre of Fuji Xerox outside Japan," he said.
After living in the city for more than three years, Ueda said he feels as relaxed in Shenzhen as he is at home and foreign flavours like Japanese foods are very easy to find here.
"If you like a place, you always hope it can get better and better," Ueda said. "As foreigners working and living in Shenzhen for quite a long period of time, we share this feeling. So we would very much like to put forward our suggestions on aspects in which Shenzhen still needs to improve. Actually, we have already done that and will continue to do so."
According to the latest statistics, Shenzhen is now home to 79 of the world's top 500 multinational corporations.
