US economy
WASHINGTON: US Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan said on Wednesday that the slowdown in US economy which began in the second half of last year has yet to run its full course. The chairman blamed much of the economy's weakness on efforts by US businesses to cut back quickly on production in the face of falling sales.
Statement
HANOI: Vietnamese President Tran Duc Luong and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin yesterday signed here a joint statement on the strategic partnership between the two countries, affirming that the two countries will consolidate and further develop their traditional friendship and multi-faceted co-operation in the 21st century.
Aminal disease
LONDON: Nine new cases of foot-and-mouth disease were confirmed in Britain on Wednesday as the government promised continued support for desperate farmers. The total number of animals slaughtered or due to be destroyed in Britain is now believed to stand at 11,000, with 102 farms around the country under restrictions.
UN-Iraq talks
UNITED NATIONS: United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan said Wednesday that the world body and Iraq will hold their second round of talks on weapons inspection and the lifting of sanctions in mid-April or early May.
