Fiji president calls for peace
|
FIJI'S President Ratu Josefa Iloilo yesterday night called on people to maintain peace following a court ruling that declared the present Fiji Government illegitimate, the fijilive.com website reported.
In his national address, Iloilo urged Fiji citizens to deal with the Court of Appeal's ruling in a mature way as the nation is now being watched closely by the rest of the world.
He said the interim administration will now have to make necessary decisions to return Fiji to full constitutional rule.
The Court of Appeal of Fiji yesterday ruled that the present government is illegitimate and the 1997 Constitution remains the supreme law of the country.
The court said the country's parliament was not dissolved but prorogued following the coup by George Speight and his supporters in May last year.
The judgement also said a new president will have to be elected within the next two weeks.
