NATIONAL Semiconductor, a leading US chip maker, unveiled new chips for progress-scanning digital video (PDVD) players in Shenzhen yesterday.
The single-chip solution named Mediamatics DVD offers tailored adaptations to local DVD manufacturers.
According to marketing director for Asia-Pacific Region of the company, Thomas Rothhaupt, the progressive scanning technology provides more stable and clear configuration than ordinary DVD players, which configure pictures by scanning every other line on the screen.
The core technology for the PDVD players employs, in contrast, a single chip that integrates many functions, according to Rothhaupt.
The new chip utilizes both digital and analogue technologies, enabling the PDVD players to process both signals.
According to Rothhaupt, the new chip also takes over many of the front-end functionalities on ordinary DVD players, thus shaving over US$40 off production costs for each player.
Rothhaupt says that the company makes a special point to develop the Chinese market because it believes that 25 per cent of its revenue will be generated in China in five years.
