Census
HONG KONG: Starting on March 15, a major population census will be conducted in the Hong Kong SAR. During the two-week-long census period, 2.2 million local residents will be obliged to answer questions designed by the Statistics Bureau of the Hong Kong SAR Government. A HK$500 fine will be imposed on anyone who doesn't answer the questions, the director of the Statistics Bureau warned.
Cyclone
SUIXI:A disastrous cyclone struck Suixi Township in western Guangdong Province on February 26 around 3am while people were asleep. One person was slightly injured, 80 houses were damaged and about 14,000 people were affected by the disaster. The direct economic loss is expected to reach 2.8 million yuan (US$0.336 million).
Rumour denied
SHANGHAI: The Shanghai Municipal Construction Committee and the Shanghai Urban Planning and Management Bureau recently stated that Shanghai will not build a 300-story skyscraper, as the city strictly controls the number of high-rise apartment buildings. A rumour has recently circulated that Shanghai would build a 300-story tower that could accommodate 100,000 people.
Quadruplets born
HEFEI: A woman gave birth to quadruplets in Suzhou City, Anhui Province on Sunday. The quadruplets are two boys and two girls, an extremely rare combination. Each girl was followed by a boy in birth order.
Baby saved
NINGBO: A baby born to be a drug addict has reportedly been treated and cured of drug addiction. The baby was born prematurely and showed signs of drug addiction immediately after her birth.
The mother of the baby is said to be a driver and became addicted to drugs three years ago.

GUANGZHOU: New progress has been made in environmental protection in Guangzhou, capital city of South China's Guangdong Province, an official with the provincial government said last week. The composite index for the city's environment has reached its highest level in 10 years, the official said, adding that the air quality has witnessed significant improvement over the years.
