Defiant Baumann gets longer suspension

无视国际田联的禁赛令 德国长跑选手鲍曼遭到重罚
THE IAAF, athletics ruling body, on Tuesday slapped another year's suspension on to Germany's disgraced former Olympic champion Dieter Baumann after he ignored the ban already imposed for failing two dope tests by running last Sunday in the Gemran indoor championships.
Istvan Gyulai, IAAF secretary-general, told German agency SID that the ruling body were within their rights to impose the extra penalty onto the two year ban already imposed last September on the 36-year-old 1992 5000 metres champion which means his ban will now run till February 2003.
Baumann, who is to have his case heard by the International Sports Tribunal in Lausanne, Switzerland, in April, tested positive twice for nandrolone in October and November 1999.
"It's automatic: the suspension imposed on an athlete starts again on the date that the athlete breaks the ban," the Hungarian said.
However, Baumann's lawyer reacted furiously to this latest sanction on his client.
"The IAAF have already acted outside the law and now they have decided to lash out at him with a left and a right hook," he said.
While Baumann will receive little sympathy from the German Federation (DLV) they are to appeal to the IAAF over the suspension of the eight other runners who comepted against Baumann in Sunday's race - which to their embarrassment he won.
Under IAAF rules any runner who competes against a banned athlete risks suspension. (SD-Agencies)
