Sandstorm marks CPPCC, NPC openings

THE Ninth National People's Congress (NPC), the country's top lawmaking body, convenes its fourth session today after its presidium approved the agenda for the current session yesterday morning.
The agenda includes green-lighting the 10th Five-year Plan and other economic issues.
Zeng Jianhui, spokesman of the annual NPC session, said China is going to make amendment and revoke laws, rules and regulations that contradict with WTO rules and China's commitments.
The NPC will also draft antidumping and antimonopoly regulations in light of China's looming WTO entry, he added.
Meanwhile, members of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) also made their way into the Great Hall of the People through dusty Beijing winds on Saturday and called on the authorities to spend more in environmental protection.
The capital's gritty sky is among the many topics on the agenda at the annual meeting of the CPPCC, the country's most important advisor to the development of economic and social policy, which started on Saturday afternoon and will be concluded on March 12.
According to Qi Huaiyuan, spokesman of the CPPCC session, members of the consultative body are also focusing on economic issues.
Up to February 28, the CPPCC National Committee had received 127 proposals for this session, 60 of which concern China's economic development, accounting for 47.2 per cent of the total.(SD News)
