(Key words: masterpiece, neighbour, love, arrogant, pride, separate, disgust, suit, reunite)
Pride and Prejudice, published in 1813, is a masterpiece of a British woman writer Jane Austen (1775-1817)
At the centre of the story were two sisters, Jane and Elizabeth. They lived in Hertfordshire with their parents and three sisters.
Charles Bingley, a rich young bachelor (1), took a house nearby and became their neighbour. His two sisters and his friend Darcy came with him. At a party given by Bingley, the rich young man fell in love with Jane. While Darcy was attracted by Elizabeth because she was not only beautiful but quick-witted (2). Darcy was a very arrogant (3) man, full of pride for himself. He offended (4) Elizabeth by his self-important behaviour at the pary. What was more, he and Bingley's two sisters separated Bingley from Jane. This deepened Elizabeth's disgust (5) for Darcy.
However, Darcy found himself deeply in love with Elizabeth despite her humble (6) family background. Elizabeth, having met Darcy on several occasions, discovered that he was exactly the man who would most suit her. Yet she could not forgive him for what he had done to Jane. So Darcy wrote a letter justifying his separation of his friend and Jane. Finally Bingley and Jane were reunited and so were Darcy and Elizabeth.
