David Herbert Lawrence (1885-1930)
|
BRITISH writer D H Lawrence is justly acclaimed for his novels, such as Sons and Lovers (1913), Women in Love (1920) and Lady Chatterley's Lover (1928).
During his lifetime, Lawrence created literary scandals with his work, even facing prosecution for indecency because of the uncommonly explicit nature of his prose. In fact, it was not until over 30 years after its creation that the complete version of Lady Chatterley's Lover was permitted to be published in Britain.
Lawrence travelled to Italy, later continuing to Australia and the United States, although poor health led him to return to Italy. In addition to novels, Lawrence wrote poetry, literary criticism, short stories and travel classics. Even his paintings, created in the 1920's in the expressionistic style, garnered praise posthumously.
In the year of 1929, though he continued to travel extensively, Lawrence's health worsened, as he contracted bronchitis. Lawrence died on March 2, 1930, in a sanatorium in Vence, France.
