Absolutely Cameron Diaz
|
ASIDE from Cameron Diaz's obvious beauty and acting talent, what makes the 28 year-old former model so irresistible? “She's warm, she's beautiful and she's sexy," as ex-beau Matt Dillon put it when the two were dating.
Others who know her well say that she drinks like a fish and eats like a truck driver.
Diaz grew up in Long Beach, California, where she was raised by her Cuban-American father and her Anglo-German mother. A tough, heavy metal-loving teen who wasn't interested in school, she became a successful model after being discovered at a concert, earning US$2,000 a day and building a reputation as a sunny, all-American girl perfect for selling Calvin Klein jeans and Coca-Cola.
She enjoyed the work but knew it wasn't her life's ambition. When her modelling agent encouraged her to audition for the role of a voluptuous(性感) nightclub singer in Jim Carrey's 1994 hit, The Mask, Diaz agreed, mostly as a joke. She tried out for a small part, but the director fell in love with her and gave the lead — after making her read for the role 12 times.
After The Mask, she made a series of small, independent films, but in 1997, she broke out big-time in My Best Friend's Wedding, almost stealing the film from Julia Roberts.
While filming Feeling Minnesota in 1995 she met Matt Dillon, 36, who was in the same area shooting Beautiful Girls. She fell for him instantly and signed on for There's Something About Mary, she said, mainly so they could work together. But in September 1998, Dillon and Diaz's three-year partnership ended amid rumours of his infidelities.
The love of Cameron's life right now is actor Jared Leto, 28, who is perhaps best-known for his role in the TV series My So-Called Life.
The US$12 million she earned for her latest film, the big screen Charlie's Angels, a US$90 million send-up of the popular 1976-1981 TV series about three sexy, savvy(机智的) female detectives, which also stars Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu, has finally pushed Diaz onto Hollywood's A-list.
Q: What does being on the Hollywood A-list mean to you?
DIAZ: It means I'm definitely going to see some of the best scripts out there — things I never dreamed possible. I started with absolutely nothing when I did The Mask. I didn't even know what a movie camera was. I was just a model. I had no aspirations to be an actress. So I know how fortunate I am.
Q: What do you think you've achieved in making Charlie's Angels?
DIAZ: I achieved what I wanted to achieve. I laughed every day when I went to work. I got to drive fast cars and fast boats. And I got paid to do it.
Q: Did you watch Charlie's Angels when you were a kid?
DIAZ: Certainly. I was in kindergarten when it was first out. My sister would play Farrah because she had long hair. I would play whoever my sister would let me play. Usually Bosley.
Q: Do you miss modelling?
DIAZ: No. In the movies you work with people for three months. As a model you work one or two days and never see them again.
Q: Who would be your all-time ideal Hollywood leading man?
DIAZ: Harrison Ford. I'd love to work with him someday. He's really my ideal man for masculinity.
Q: Do you think much about the future?
DIAZ: I have always kept my expectations low while welcoming a new challenge almost every day. I hate playing it safe.
Q: Still, you must tell us, how do you manage to eat so much and stay so slim?
DIAZ: I am very fortunate. But I'm still young. I think women's bodies are beautiful no matter what shape. And I'm not afraid of gaining weight... but I guess I should wait till I get there and see.
Q: How do you relax now?
DIAZ: I have two cats, a lot of friends, I go shopping in flea markets and stay clear of TV. I don't even own a TV because I think it's the devil.
Q: Do you feel like you're in competition with other A-list actresses in Hollywood, like Julia Roberts?
DIAZ: I'm not in any race, so I don't really see the contenders for it, you know? I'm not looking for that, I don't open myself up to it. I've done this the whole time for myself. I think there're a lot of roles out there, and everybody gets what they're meant to get.
Q: Do you have a personal philosophy?
DIAZ: You live your life, you're responsible for yourself, what happens in your life. I think that you can't always plan the big picture, but moment to moment you can certainly do something about it.
