Road ahead mapped out

BY the year of 2021, South China's Guangdong Province will accomplish the Four Moderninations of industry, agriculture, national defence and science and technology, according to a latest research result released by Professor Niu Wenyuan with the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
According to the research result, 13 provinces and cities will take the lead to achieve the Four Modernizations before the year 2050, with Shanghai achieving the goal in 2015, Beijing in 2018, Guangdong Province in 2021, Tianjin in 2026 and Jiangsu Province in 2033. The population of these 13 provinces and cities account for 41.5 per cent of the country's total.
This is the first time that China specified its prospect of modernization for the whole nation.
By the year 2050, China as a whole will be able to join the league of developed nations.
Professor Zhu said that connotation of the word "modernization" has changed as the mankind enters the information era from the industrial era. Therefore, what China intends to achieve in the 21th century is not modernization in the traditional sense but the one with information revolution as an important part of it.(Alfred Zhang)
