FINANCE Minister Xiang Huaicheng has proposed a pay rise for government and public institution employees and a 17.7 per cent rise in spendings for national defence in his report at the ongoing NPC session.
In the report he delivered in Beijing yesterday, the second day of the annual session, the minister said the additional central government spending of 10.8 billion yuan (US$1.3 billion) will be earmarked for raising the salaries of the employees of the government and public services.
He also said that expenditures for national defence will be increased.
Expenditures for national defence in the central budget for 2001 amount to 141.004 billion yuan, up 17.7 per cent over last year.
This is mainly to meet the need to raise the salaries of officers, enlisted men and women and office staff as well as the need to update technologies of the military, he said. (SD-Xinhua)
