Drug administration set up

SHENZHEN created a special drug administration yesterday as part of the city's efforts to reform its drug administration and supervision mechanism.
According to Ding Dehai, who is responsible for the establishment of the new department, the new administration's major functions include strengthening the supervision and administration of research, production, sales and administering of drugs.
Enterprises which apply for a business licence from the Shenzhen Municipal Administration for Industry and Commerce to start drug production and sales must first get a permit from the drug administration. The administration will also oversee registration and administration of licensed pharmacists.
The drug administration and supervision function was stripped from the Shenzhen Municipal Public Health Bureau as an important part of the medical reform to assign different medical management and supervising of medical care and drug-making industries to different departments.
Ding said that as the nation steps up its efforts to fight against shoddy drugs and the manipulation of drug prices, Shenzhen's determination to set up the drug administration will help encourage the healthy development of its burgeoning pharmaceutics industry.
Last year, the city sold 5.43 billion yuan (US$658 million) worth of drug and other medical products. With 57 medicine-making enterprises, 1,000 retail drug stores and more than 200 enterprises manufacturing medical equipment and appliances, it has become the country's most important production centre of bio-products and medical appliances. "It's important and practical to set up a drug administration here in the city keep the drug market in order," said Ding Dehai.
