Jobs scheme targets mainland professionals

THE Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government is proposing to introduce the Admission of Mainland Professional Scheme on a sector-specific basis, initially targeting the information technology and financial services sectors, a Hong Kong official said on Friday.
Speaking at a press conference, Secretary for Security Regina Ip said that according to a manpower forecast released last year, Hong Kong is evolving towards a knowledge-based economy, and demand for highly educated professionals, particularly IT and financial talents, will grow in the coming five years.
The HKSAR Government forecasts the IT sector will face a shortage of 15,000 professionals by 2005 and 50,000 by 2010. Manpower needed in the financial services sector was also expected to rise to 219,300 by 2005 from 176,500 in 1999.
Stressing that the government will continue to provide training and learning opportunities for local work force, Ip said that before sufficient local graduates are trained up, “it is important to admit from the mainland professionals not readily available in Hong Kong."
She said mainland talents to be admitted must possess skills and knowledge not readily available locally, and the applicant should have a good education background, and should be employed by a local company in a job relevant to his academic qualifications or working experience.
As at the end of February, a total of 117 mainland talents were admitted.(SD-Xinhua)
