No bomb found on board
|
A PAKISTANI jumbo jet was preparing for take-off early yesterday from Manchester, northwest England, after a search team found no trace of an alleged bomb on board.
A ministry of defence team searched the Boeing 747 after it was evacuated early Saturday following four anonymous telephone calls from someone claiming to belong to an Islamic extremist group.
A total of 462 passengers and 17 crew were taken off when the plane landed at 9.10am (9.10 GMT). Police waited till after a 1600 GMT deadline had passed, when the bomb was supposedly timed to explode, before allowing security crews to board the plane. Army bomb disposal experts had earlier been placed on standby.
However no bomb was found on board the Pakistan International Airlines jet, a police spokeswoman said just before midnight. "Nothing has been found."
She said it was now being readied for take-off, having been taxied back to the terminal from the far end of a runway where it had been parked during the day.
The plane was en route from Karachi to New York via Lahore and a stopover in Manchester for refuelling.(SD-Agencies)
