24-hour passage urged
|
PROPOSALS to set up one-stop and 24-hour checkpoints were submitted to the ongoing sessions of the National People's Congress (NPC) and Chinese People's Political Conference (CPPCC) in Beijing, as the congestion at rush hours, especially on holidays, remain serious.
CPPCC members from Shenzhen and Hong Kong maintained that the existing two checkpoints of both sides are redundant, and a one-stop check could save time for people who cross the border.
They warned that congestion at the checkpoints could hinder communications between Hong Kong and Shenzhen, and would even affect Shenzhen's investment environment.
Two Hong Kong NPC deputies proposed both SZ and HK authorities open the checkpoints at Huanggang 24 hours a day.
They said the existing service lags behind actual demand, citing the 110 million passengers who crossed checkpoints last year, a 30 per cent increase from the previous year.
They also suggested lifting the restriction on existing daily quota of 2,000 mainlanders allowed to travel to Hong Kong in a bid to boost the tourism industry of the Special Administrative Region.(Alfred Zhang)
