THE Eighth International Furniture and Woodworking Machinery Fair which was opened in Shenzhen Hi-Tech Exhibition Centre on Saturday is the largest ever to be held in the city.
The 40,000sqm exhibition area is crammed with 2,300 booths representing nearly 250 enterprises engaged in furniture manufacture, woodworking machinery and family decoration from SZ, Hong Kong, Taiwan and the Pearl River Delta region.
It is estimated that around 100,000 enterprises are attending the five-day fair co-organized by the Shenzhen Municipal Furniture Industry Association (SFIA) and the International Furniture and Decoration (Hong Kong) Association (IFHK).
Vice-Mayor Wang Suiming said at the opening ceremony on Saturday that the exhibition has heavy influence on China's furniture industry.
It was told the city's furniture production and export volume, which topped the country last year, reached a whopping 14 billion yuan (US$1.696 billion) and US$850 million respectively, accounting for 30 per cent of the country's total export of furniture.
"This fair, themed 'New Century and New Furniture', can represent the highest level of the Chinese furniture industry in terms of numbers of participants, exhibition areas and facilities," said Christine Lung, secretary general of IFHK.
"Furniture design has become more and more important in the furniture industry," added Lung. "The fair gives us a chance to learn new designing ideas from China and abroad."
The fair also attracted over 2,000 international purchasers from Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Europe.
The furniture industry has been listed as one of the eight key traditional industries in the city. The cumulative trade volume in previous fairs reached over six billion yuan.
The fair was positioned by the local government as an international, professional exhibition with a large scale and high quality.
