German design wins

THE design by the German firm Architekten von Gerkan, Marg und Partner (GMP) of the SZ Convention and Exhibition Centre (SZCEC) was officially chosen on Friday after having been named one of the three "preferred designs" decided last month.
GMP's design is considered excellent because it emphasizes the use of natural light and looks like "a clear statement for the 21st century", according to a statement by the jury, which was made up of respected architects from five countries.
The centre, a key project invested by the municipal government this year, is to be built on the southern tip of the new city centre in Futian District. Involving an investment of 2.5 billion yuan (US$300 million), it will occupy an area of 220,000sqm. The convention space is expected to be around 250,000sqm while the space available for exhibitions will be around 120,000 to 150,000sqm, three or four times larger than the present China Hi-Tech Fair Exhibition Centre.
Besides GMP, other two designs, by Murphy/Jahn Inc from the USA and Australia's Cox Architects, stood out from a total of five submissions. (Vivian Li)
