PUFFIN (海鸭), also called the sea parrot or bottlenose (大鼻子), is one of the world's oddest-looking birds.
The great triangular-hooked beak (嘴), which is nearly as large as the head, is coloured dull yellow or white at the base, grayish blue or orange in the middle, and vermilion (朱红色) at the end. At each corner of the mouth is an orange circle. The face is white, with grayish blue markings around the eye that make it look like the face of a circus clown.
The Atlantic puffins and the large-billed puffins are found on the east coast of North America. The puffin of the west coast has a long crest (羽冠) of yellow feathers over each eye.
Puffins nest in large colonies on seaside and island cliffs, usually laying only one egg, in a burrow dug one or two metres deep. Hatched in about six weeks of feeding, the parent birds desert their young, which then waits alone until it becomes thin and its flightfeathers have grown, and then it flies out to sea by itself.
Puffins eat a variety of marine organisms. They are able to catch as many as 10 samll fish in succession and to carry them crosswise (横着) in the bill to the nest.
