Marrow bank on wheels

SZ'S first marrow donation bus made its debut in the downtown area yesterday.
American International Assurance (AIA), which has a local branch, donated the bus, essentially a specially-designed bus equipped with apparatus for collecting blood, from which marrow can be separated with advanced technology, to the Shenzhen Red Cross Society.
The vehicle is worth 450,000 yuan (US$54,000).
A total of 163 AIA employees donated blood at the donating ceremony or after it arrived downtown.
Asked why the AIA members came to give marrow, Alwin M D Lam, senior vice president of AIA Foundation and also AIA senior vice president & regional executive, answered: “Because it is of great social significance. We want to push all of society to support this love-giving project and do our part to support the city's bone marrow bank."
