Crime chiefs to join forces
|
HEADS of crime investigation units of Hong Kong, Macao and Guangdong of China agreed on Wednesday to establish a working group to combat cross-boundary crimes, the Xinhua News Agency reported on Wednesday.
The agreement was announced after a biannual meeting during which the problems of triads, human smuggling, commercial crimes and drugs were discussed.
The rise in the numbers of youngsters using psychotropic substances was of particular concern.
Police representatives from the three regions have agreed the “broad principle" of forming a working group which would discuss methods on “how best to tackle the problem".
Hong Kong police have blamed popular rave parties for rising drug use among the territory's youngsters. The number of juveniles apprehended for drug offences soared to 1,873 last year from 1,055 in 1999.
The meeting between the crime chiefs also came after 22 people were arrested during raids in Hong Kong on Monday in a joint operation with law enforcers from Australia and Britain, where a syndicate was suspected to have been involved in illegal immigration.
Hong Kong police believed the 22 suspects -- of which seven had so far been charged -- were involved mainly in laundering the proceeds of the scam from Australia and Britain in 106 bank accounts in the territory.(SD-Agencies)
