Motorola to lay off 7,000
|
MOTOROLA INC, the world's second largest mobile-phone producer, has joined some other big businesses in unveiling layoff plans as a way to escape fallouts of the economic slowdown.
The Schaumburg, Illinois-based company said that it will cut 7,000 more jobs, about five percent of its work force, in the near future, raising the total number of its layoff this year to 12,000, or 36 percent of the unit's employees, the Reuters reported.
Motorola, which provides 140,000 jobs worldwide, said that job reduction will be completed in the next two quarters, with an aim to enhance its competitiveness in the world market.
Projected global cell-phone sales for the industry in 2001 have gone down sharply, from a forecast of 500 million to 600 million earlier this year, to Motorola's recent below-500-million warning last month, according to the Reuters report.
