High-performance material developed

DIAMOND coating material has long been a subject of research in many countries. Though the material features super performance in hardness, conductivity and resistance to corrosion and friction, the cost of production is just too high for its wide application.
With the present technology one can only produce such materials at very high temperature, therefore jacking up cost.
Shenzhen-based Leidi Science & Technology Company has come up with world first diamond-like carbon, an alternative material for diamond coating with the same features. What's more, the new material can be produced under normal temperature, greatly reducing the production cost.
The hardness of the diamond-like carbon equals to the natural diamond, making it one of the hardest engineered materials, according to Liu Nanlin, president of the company.
The new material has been applied to bone surgery, in which the dead bones were replaced by artificial ones made from the new material. Doctors say diamond-like carbon bones allow muscles to grow on it.
The company now supplies the material to electronics, computer and timepiece manufacturers, who reported improved performance of their products.
Intel Corporation has requested the company to produce heat-releasing components for their central processing units for computers using diamond-like carbon.
According to Liu, the material in fact has a wide application because of its high performance in a number of areas. The company plans to launch large-scale production in the near future to meet the market demand.
