Tunnel tolls to be lowered
|
THE much talked about toll fees at Wutongshan Tunnel, an important link between the city proper and eastern suburbs, will likely drop by 11.9 per cent on average.
A joint testimony by municipal pricing and transportation bureaus was held on Wednesday morning to gather input from the general public.
Two possible targets for toll reduction were 11.9 per cent and 17.7 per cent on average. Sources with the testimony say the likely plan is an 11.9-per cent cut in consideration of financial risks that may arise from the tunnel operation.
The toll fees were formulated and implemented in June, 1997. However with the substantial increase of traffic flow through the tunnel, major parameters for toll fee pricing have changed. As a result, municipal pricing and transportation bureaus initiated cost studies and came up the two rate-cut proposals.
Officials say the toll fee adjustment will both alleviate the burden of car owners and ensure the financial reward of investors and operators.
On the basis of the current traffic, the first plan may lead to a loss of revenue from toll fees of 14.28 million yuan. The second plan may lead to a loss of 21.24 million yuan on the part of operators. (SD News)
